Can Pismo boot from external FW drive? - Mac Portable

Can a PowerBook G3/400 Pismo (FireWire) boot from an external FireWire drive? Under OS 9? OS X? Something special that has to be done to the drives in order to be a boot device? I've got a 120 GB and 80 GB Maxtor FW drives, and I'm having trouble getting them to be recognized at boot time as valid boot devices. (I've don the Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete key thing to force the external drive to be recognized, but nada...) I've searched Apple's tech info lib, but didn't see an answer. Anyone know? Thanks, -- Dave C com...

I boot my Pismo off an external firewire all the time.

All I did was use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the
current Pismo internal drive to the external firewire drive. I
make sure to select that "bootable" option in the preferences.

Yes, under all conditions. And the command is simply hold option key on
    startup.

It isn't that hard. Any FW-drive which has a system or system folder on it
    will boot.

ah, yes, holding down the option key is key (heh). unless there's
no system on the internal drive, of course.
