Can see www.<domain>.com but not <domain>.com after named setup - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Good evening all, I am having a problem setting up named on RH9 linux box for an external domain. I have set up the various conf files (shown below) such that I can now hit www.fifthsparrow.com, news.fifthsparrow.com and so on; what I can *not* do, however, is hit fifthsparrow.com without the prefix. I think I have an error in my config files but I can't seem to find it and comparing them to the TrinityOS files shows no difference. I would be very grateful for any help anyone can give me w/ this issue. ----------------------------------------------------- /etc/named.conf // generated by named-bootconf.pl ...

Good evening all,

I am having a problem setting up named on RH9 linux box for an
external domain. I have set up the various conf files (shown below)
such that I can now hit www.fifthsparrow.com, news.fifthsparrow.com
and so on; what I can *not* do, however, is hit fifthsparrow.com
without the prefix.

I think I have an error in my config files but I can't seem to find it
and comparing them to the TrinityOS files shows no difference. I would
be very grateful for any help anyone can give me w/ this issue.

/etc/named.conf

// generated by named-bootconf.pl

options {
directory "/var/named";
query-source address * port 53;
};

zone "." IN {
type hint;
file "named.ca";
};

zone "fifthsparrow.com" IN {
type master;

file "named.hosts";
};

You need to add an IP called "" (nothing) and one called *

OK, using the * entry worked for all non-blank server names (i.e.,
randomtextfff.fifthsparrow.com and such are now supported) but trying
the line

IN CNAME www

still does not bind 'fifthsparrow.com'.

When I run the command 'dig fifthsparrow.com', I am receiving this
output.

Is this what I should be seeing for a real DNS lookup? The dig
results for www.fifthsparrow.com, ns.fifthsparrow.com and anything
hitting the wildcard are much different.

Thanks,
Donald Wheeler

Just to make sure, the 'CNAMA' was a typo - you meant to say 'CNAME',
correct?

No. You should see the IP address of the machine...
