Can't create dir in /usr/include? - Mac Programming

Hi All, Forgive the possibly dumb question, but I've been unable to find an answer elsewhere. I'm attempting to compile and install the PNG libaries from source. The installer is quitting because it is not able to create the libpng12 directory in /usr/include. I discovered that I am unable to create the directory manually; I get "mkdir: libpng12: Permission denied" How in the world do I get this thing to install? Default Can't create dir in /usr/include?

    Hi All,

Forgive the possibly dumb question, but I've been unable to find an
    answer elsewhere.

I'm attempting to compile and install the PNG libaries from source. The
installer is quitting because it is not able to create the libpng12
directory in /usr/include. I discovered that I am unable to create the
directory manually; I get "mkdir: libpng12: Permission denied"

How in the world do I get this thing to install? My user account level
is "Admin", so I can't understand why I'm not being allowed to add the
directory. I thought it might be because I don't have root access, so I
attempted to use "sudo" to create the directory as root, but was refused.

    Any ideas?

Thanks very much. I've been using OSX for a while now, but this is the
first time I've seriously had to get under the hood. I'm using OS 10.1.5
(can't upgrade--don't have the $$$ as a starving grad student and the
school won't pay for it, although it's their machine).

sudo mkdir /usr/include/whatever should work. You have to enter your
    password when it asks.

Note also that you can install libpng through fink. Though, come to
think of it, fink might require 10.2, sooooo...

What installer ? make install ?

To install UNIX stuff, the usual way is:

<unpack the archive and cd to the directory>
    ../configure
    make
    sudo make install

you can usually do the first steps as any user, but you need to be root
to execute make install, hence the sudo.

"oh". An older version of Fink for 10.1 is available from the Fink download page
    at <http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php?phpLang=en>
