Can't erase CD-RW's under SuSE 8.2 - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi, I'm using SuSE Linux 8.2 and I've got the problem that I cannot erase CD-RW's. I tried it with k3b and xcdroast. I always get an error from cdrecord like: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION) (or this is rather the last output in xcdroast which uses cdrecord). My drive is QSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM SBW-161 and it is working properly under Windows, so there doesn't seem to be a hardware fault. In the beginning I also couldn't write (only with force and under error-messages, but this started working after I deleted the cdrom entries under /var/lib/hardware/unique-keys/ the files that show up with cdrom ...

    Default Can't erase CD-RW's under SuSE 8.2

    Hi,

I'm using SuSE Linux 8.2 and I've got the problem that I cannot erase
CD-RW's. I tried it with k3b and xcdroast. I always get an error from
    cdrecord like:
    0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)
(or this is rather the last output in xcdroast which uses cdrecord).
    My drive is
    QSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM SBW-161
and it is working properly under Windows, so there doesn't seem to be
a hardware fault. In the beginning I also couldn't write (only with
force and under error-messages, but this started working after I
    deleted the cdrom entries under
    /var/lib/hardware/unique-keys/
the files that show up with cdrom entries under
    hwscan --list
There were 2 files, I deleted them and SuSE did a hardware scan at the
next booting and set up one entry for a CD-Rom now. So now I can write
properly. Does anybody have an idea what I could do? Are there any
known issues with cdrecord and this drive? (didn't find any on the
    web)

    Any help is greatly appreciated,

    As root from the console or xterm session;

    cdrecord dev="0,0,0" -v blank=fast

Modify to match your system, hint: cdrecord --scanbus

See 'man cdrecord' for the details

Thanks very much for your answer.
I tried it out, but it aborts with the same error message as I receive
with xcdroast, namely (after the error message there is the error
    message I get when I use blank=all):

    Have you tried different drivers?

    # cdrecord --driverhelp # shows available drivers

    # cdrecord driver=drivername

My first guess is that you are using the wrong link in /media. You MUST use
/media/cdrecorder as your link. If K3B still balks, look to see what
/media/cdrecorder links to in /dev and use that.

    Hi,

thanks for your answer. I really was optimistic after it because I
havaen't tried it out yet, but every driver yields the same error.
    Even the cdr_simul driver.
    But thanks nevertheless,

    Hi,

thanks for your answer. The link from /media/cdrecorder is /dev/sr0
which should be the right link. I also can access CD's when I mount
/media/cdrecorder I just cannot blank the CD-RW's. Strange error, mmh?

Hmmmm, Did you create that link or did Suse do it? The reason I
ask is that my system uses /dev/scd0 for my CD-RW drive.

Mine uses /dev/sr0. I am really puzzled by this refusal to do something
    normal.
