Can't mount CD-Rom - too many symlinks - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I just installed a new Debian system (Woody) by ftp. Everything seemed to work pretty well, but I can't mount my CD-ROM. It is a generic ATAPI IDE drive. The entry in fstab is /dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,user, noauto 0 0 The mount command returns: mount: Too many levels of symbolic link Running ls -l /dev/cdrom returns the following: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Nov 22 20:33 /dev/cdrom => /dev/cdrom What can I do to resolve this?...

Default Can't mount CD-Rom - too many symlinks

I just installed a new Debian system (Woody) by ftp. Everything seemed
to work pretty well, but I can't mount my CD-ROM.
It is a generic ATAPI IDE drive.

    The entry in fstab is
    /dev/cdrom
    /cdrom iso9660 ro,user, noauto 0 0

    The mount command returns:
mount: Too many levels of symbolic link

Running ls -l /dev/cdrom returns the following:

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Nov 22 20:33 /dev/cdrom => /dev/cdrom

What can I do to resolve this?

    Hello

The symlink is pointing to itself, and obviously that can't work. You
have to find out the real device name of your cdrom. If you don't use
ide-scsi emulation, device names depend on how the drive is connected:

    hda: primary master
    hdb: primary slave
    hdc: secondary master
    hdd: secondary slave

You can also look at the files in /proc/ide to find out.

    Next, remove the symlink:

    cd /dev
    rm cdom

and make a new link pointing to the real device:

    ln -s hdc cdrom

    (if your drive is hdc)

    best regards

If it's a SCSI drive, or looks like one due to using the ide-scsi module,
you can probe a bit with "cdrecord -scanbus" to look at what CD/SCSI devices
you think you have, but even if it's using the ide-scsi, you can usually get
away with using the IDE device names.

All such SCSI devices are listed in /proc/scsi in modern kernels. IDE
devices are listed in /proc/ide/{devicename}/media. A fast "grep .
/proc/ide/*/media" will give you a good hint of which devices are what.

This can be done with one step, using the "force" option:
    ln -sf hdc /dev/cdrom

That worked just fine. Thanks very much to both of you.
