Can't su root anymore - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Next to a power failure while I was editing the password file I have the message : % su su: L'usager root n'existe pas. I have no problem to log in other accounts and I notice that there is a + sign in front of the root user : % head -3 /etc/passwd +root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin: daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin: How can I take off this bad character or backup the previous version of the password file? My host distribution is an Mandrake 8.2 Thank you...

Check if you have a backup of the file in /etc (e.g. "passwd-"). Or
remove the "+" with a text editor.

What in the? How did that sneak in?

Boot from a floppy or CD in a rescue or single-user mode, and hand-edit the
    file.

Oh yes: don't normally edit the /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow files with a
plain text editor, use "vipw" to include some sanity checking and avoid
over-writing changes users might make to their finger information,
    passwords, etc.
