Can't Use IRC in Mdrake9.1 - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I have tried using both KSIRC and XCHAT to connect to various undernet servers on various ports, but I can never make it work. It often returns the message 'no known route to host.' Sometimes it says 'checking identd.' I installed identd off the Mandrake distro and created a Shorewall exception (113/tcp 113/udp) to open the port. This did not help. According to the MCC, identd is running. I used Webmin to turn Shorewall off entirely, and this did not help either. I'm on an ethernet connection with DHCP. I'm on an ethernet connection with DHCP. No problems surfing the web,
just with irc. (And java, but we'll get to that later.)

    Any ideas? Thanks.

I forgot to add that I often get the message "hostname 'x.x.x' not found."

Are you behind a NAT server, or , say using a cable modem using PPPOE?
Running behind someone else's firewall that might be blocking identd? I
certainly block it on firewalls that I run, to prevent weasels from
using insecure machines that might get broken *behind* my firewalls to
ue IRC servers without my knowledge.
