Can you Install AIX 5.1.0.03 from /tmp rather than /usr/sys/inst.images? - AIX

I'm a novice AIX SysAdmin looking to install the Level 3 maintenance update (i.e. from 5.1.0.01 to 5.1.0.03). Q: Can I install the update (Vol 1 and 2) from anywhere other than /usr/sys/inst.images, if my /usr file system is too full? I can see no reason why replacing /usr/sys/inst.images with /tmp in the following will not work. Also using "-t /tmp_save" to define an alternative storage device for the updates. I'd just like someone to confirm. ;0) 1. Click on the link for the Volume 1 package (the *.tar.gz filename) below. 2. Put the package in the /usr/sys/inst.images directory. 3. ...

    1. Click on the link for the Volume 1 package (the *.tar.gz filename) below.
    2. Put the package in the /usr/sys/inst.images directory. 3. Extract the filesets from the package by using the following commands:
    1. cd /usr/sys/inst.images
    2. gzip -d -c 510103.v1.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
    4. Back up your system.
    5. Install the package by creating a table of contents for install to use. Then update the install subsystem itself. Run SMIT to complete the installation.
    1. inutoc /usr/sys/inst.images
    2. installp -acgXd /usr/sys/inst.images
    -t /tmp_save bos.rte.install
    3. smit update_all

Probably not a good idea. Generally better to create separate filesystem
and use a mount point of /usr/sys/inst.images and then, if necessary,
you can get rid of it easily afterwards.
