can you link swapped images?

I'm setting up a series of disjointed rollovers -- mouse over some text, an
image appears at the top of the page; mouse over another bit of text and a
different image appears in the same place, etc. Is it possible to assign a
different link to each swapped image?

Yes - you would either have to use javascript to write the links
dynamically, or layers to contain transparent GIFs to which the links have
been applied, in a vertical stack over your swapped images. Then the
disjoint behavior would not only swap the image, but reveal the desired
layer for the link.
