Re: Can you Make text Gradient ?
Tracy,
Select the text you wish to apply a gradient to, then click on the gradient color button with FILL button being in front (not stroke). That's the middle color button. The default for gradient is ALWAYS black to white, so to get colors you must first click on one of the color boxes in the Gradient palette (below the slider bar), then go to options in Color palette (upper right arrowhead), change from Grayscale to RGB/CMYK/HSB or WEB safe RGB. and now you can click any color from the color bar. You MUST also do the same thing for the other color box below the gradient slider. If you wish to add additional colors, just click under the slider bar. This includes changing the color mode from Grayscale to a color mode to that also. These boxes as well as their gradient proportions can be moved. To eliminate a color box, just drag it below the Palette.

Re: Can you Make text Gradient ?
Bob,
Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I am so new at this I feel like a dummy.
I did try what you said and my text is totally black, not even gradient. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Do you know?
Thanks soooo much!

Re: Can you Make text Gradient ?
Tracy,
Create outlines of the text, apply the gradient, and then use the gradient tool to apply the gradient across the whole line of text instead of across each letter.

Re: Can you Make text Gradient ?
Tracy,
With text selected, go to Appearance palette, click Type, then click the Option arrow (upper right triangle) and Add New Fill, then click Gradient with colors chosen (or you can do it now) as directed above. I believe this was new in CS. No need to convert to outlines. This way you still have fully editable text.
