You can PLACE Illustrator files, (AI, EPS, PDF), and very effectively paste from Illustrator, but you can't open...

Not exactly true. If you paste with AICB and preserve paths selected,> in uneditable form.
all objects become InDesign objects and can be edited. Any text will be
converted to outlines.

Illustrator into InDesign and have them remain editable *as text*. Now
that Illustrator and InDesign share the same text engine, one can hope
that this will be different in the next versions of these programs.

Except that they don't.

He was even overstating the case for feature-level compatibility.
