Can you open Illustrator files in InDesign?

Note that when you paste text from Illustrator into InDesign, it comes
in uneditable form.

Not exactly true. If you paste with AICB and preserve paths selected,
all objects become InDesign objects and can be edited. Any text will be
converted to outlines.

True. Unfortunately, there is no way to paste text objects from
Illustrator into InDesign and have them remain editable *as text*. Now
that Illustrator and InDesign share the same text engine, one can hope
that this will be different in the next versions of these programs.
