    Default Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx

    Hi,
Today we have had a power failure, and then the workstation (Solaris
    8,
    Sparc) can't boot.

Now, when we try to boot, it prints:

INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: " "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: " "
    INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
    ENTER RUN LEVEL (0-6, s or S) [3]:

AND FOR ANY RUN LEVEL I TRY IT PRINTS:

INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx

and asks me to choose a run level all over again.

I've tried to boot from cd CD-ROM and run and fsck on the / (root)
(/var directory, is part of the / (root) filesystem). I've alse tried
to erase the utmp*, to copy them from the Solaris CD and even to
create them empty with touch, but doesn't works. The permissions and
group are set as there was originally. The message appears immediately
    after the memory test.

Is this a file system failure (or what) and what can we do now?

    Thank you in advance.

More than not, those are symptoms of earlier problems..

    1) /var is separate and did not mount or
    2) / is not mounted read/write.

Are there any earlier messages from the console, they would likely be
more helpful. Any messages from fsck? Is this a SDS/SVM partition, or
    just a straight slice?

    Hello,

I had the same problem, same messages appear under Solaris 8 on a
    SunBlade 150.
Ran fsck on root /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0, it adjusted / and /space. Then
from the # prompt in Single user mode I rebooted. The system then came
    up w/o errors.

Isn't it cool that NASA have a filesystem called "/space"? Also, in the
way my newsreader presents the list of topics, the previous OP to Anne
    was "Lightyear" :^)
