Cannot Edit Converted Legacy Text

I have a file created in a previous Illustrator version. When I open it in version 11 it asks whether I want to convert the legacy text. Whether I choose to convert or not the text comes through as a graphic. No matter what I do I seem to be unable to edit the text as text.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Are you sure the text is actually text in that file to begin with and wasn't converted to outlines prior to it's Save?

That thought did occur to me but I don't think it is the case. I cannot check it as I uninstalled the earlier software version. Also if I open the file without converting then click on the text object I can select from the menu to convert it. Surely it would not offer me that option if it was not text?

Try double-clicking on the text.
