Cannot import a .CGM file

Hello. I am trying to import (place) a .cgm file in a new document of illustrator. I am getting the following message:
"The file C:/cfcms.cgm is in a format which cannot be placed."

I have tried to use Illustrator 8.0 and upgraded to 9.01.
I have verified that all filters and extensions are installed. But still same issue. I am running Win2000.

I dont know if i am just not doing it right or if maybe i am missing an option.

Help PLEASE!!!!!!

Have you updated to Illustrator 9.0.2? <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1100> Are you seeing the .cgm file in the menu when you go to Place? In the Place File Type box is .cgm on the menu? Are you able to open the .cgm file in any other program so you know it's not corrupted? Have you tried to Open the .cgm file instead of Placing it?

Yes i tried to just open the .cgm file within Illustrator and i get the same message as if i were placing it.
And yes i do have the .cgm file extension under the file type in illustrator.
No i havent upgraded to 9.02, i will try it and let you know.
The .cgm file is from a Micrografx in Metaweb.

Hey i just tried to update to 9.0.2 and i get an error message....
"Updating ilustrator.exe has failed. The return value is 38".

Eric,

I'm not aware of what error 38 might be, but I'd try to do an uninstall of Illustrator, then do s system clean up (Defrag), then do a clean (nothing else running) re-install, update to version 9.0.1, then try the 9/0/2 update.
