Cannot Save?
Hi..new guy. I have been using FWv4 on a PC but recently migrated to
FWMX on a Mac (OSX.2.6). For some reason, every time I try to save or
close a file, I get an error "Request cannot be completed because the
file is already in use by another application." The only way I can
save is to use Save As and overwrite the existing file with the "new"
one. Any ideas?
Thanx

Re: Cannot Save?
Hello,
I am sending you draft of the upcoming TechNote I am proposing with regard
to issues saving files in Fireworks. Please read over the following
recommendations:
Problems Saving Files on Macintosh 10.x
Issue
When users save or export files on Macintosh 10.x machines, they get an
error:
"Cannot complete your request the file was not found." or
"Could not complete your request. An internal error occurred."
Reason
There are few reasons why users get these error messages and these all
relates to changes in permission where Fireworks MX saves or export the
files.
1. Users are saving and exporting the files in a Mac OS X server in user
mode.
2. Users reported an issue regarding saving Fireworks files on systems
running Norton Utilities with the AutoProtect feature turned on
3. Macintosh OS 10.2.x changes permission issues to folders where Fireworks
MX saves files.
Briefly, Fireworks overwrites files when you are saving/exporting to replace
existing files. It looks for a Temporary Items folder on the root level of
the hard drive. It saves a Temp file with a numerical name there and then
moves that file to the location specified in the Save as dialog or the
location where the file was initially saved to if a Save command was issued.
Then the file is renamed if it is a save as, or the original is deleted and
the new file renamed. That is the sequence of events. Now if the one of
these locations encounters permission problems, then Fireworks would find it
hard to save or even export files.
Solution
There is a known issue in Fireworks MX saving files in a Mac OS X server.
Fireworks MX will not save to Mac OS X server in User mode
(http://www.macromedia.com/go/16793). You can refer to TechNote 16793 for
the detailed discussion of the issue and how to workaround it.
Macromedia is aware of the issue that Norton Utilities somewhat "protected"
the files or render them as "read only". Engineers have coordinated with
Apple for possible resolution to the issue. As of now, we recommend turning
off the AutoProtect of Norton Utilities to be able to save and export
Fireworks MX files.
Restore permission in Mac OX 10.2 or later. This fixes issue with saving and
exporting from Fireworks MX. It also means increasing the startup speed,
performance and overall stability of Mac OS X, it is a good idea to repair
permissions occasionally. According to some Macintosh documentation, this is
because Mac OS X is based on a UNIX-style operating system that uses
permissions in the file system. Refer to the Apple Documentation on Using
the Repair Privileges Utility

Re: Cannot Save?
Whew...So it's a bug right? Macromedia or Apples? Depends on who you
talk to I bet. Anyway, I'm not running OSX Server or Norton
Utilities...just Anti Virus since I have some peecees on my net. I
will mess around with the settings and do the repair permissions thing
and report back...

Re: Cannot Save?
Hello David DeCristoforo,
I know how frustrated you are. However, not all users are experiencing the
issue you are having. There are quite a number who does actually and "these"
fixes ..well ..fixes the issue. Will you be kind enough to tell the
newsgroup of what are the fixes you've tried. More specifically, can you
verify if you looked into the Apple Documentation regarding changes in
permissions when upgrading to Mac 10.2.6?
Will it be possible for you to create a new user account in your Mac ? Open
Fireworks there and try saving it.
I apologize for not getting to you sooner. Office hours starts 8 am PST till
5P pm PST.
I advise you to contact Technical Support so we can troubleshoot your issue
better. You can use the link below:

Re: Cannot Save?
Sorry...don't mean to sound like an a..h.... I have tried all of the
fixes you suggested. One problem is that all of my docs are stored on
a seperate drive and since it's not a bootable volume, permissions
repair is not an option. But I did move my FW files into a folder in
my home directory and then ran the repair permissions utility with no
change in the situation. Also created a new "test" file saved to the
home folder to see if that would make any dif. And yes, I did follow
the protocols outlined by Apple on the repair process. This weekend,
I will create a new user account and see if this makes a dif. Thing
is, I will encounter even more permissions issues since all of my
other files (the ones inDW Photoshop, Illustrator, etc), will under a
different ownership.
Do you think it would be helpful to remove the programs along with any
related library / plist / prefs files and reinstall?
Thanx

Re: Cannot Save?
This may be something new, perhaps not.
I'm running Windows XP Home, and I have bought and installed (downloaded purchase) Fireworks MX 2004. It was working fine for about a week, and then I had just completed a rather extensive Icon for a download division of my website I was working on, and saved the image, an hour later I thought up something to make it look smoother, so I tried to open the file, when I got the oh so familiar error message "Could Not Open File : An Internal Error Occured". I've tried everything I know, user permissions, hidden file permissions, folder permissions, user administration fixes, everything... but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to do it all again, just to get this darned piece of crap working. I even uninstalled the program, reinstalled and tried again. Of course I cleaned out all temporary files and/or cache before reinstalling for a better chance of success.
In a word... HELP

Re: Cannot Save?
Is this the only file that you are having a problem with? Or is it
"across the board"? An "internal error" message sounds more like a
Windoze issue than a FW problem.
