Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
Long-standing problem with Acrobat for Mac, included in the Educational Version of CS2.
Auto-updates and downloaded-from-the-Adobe-site updates produce the same result: 7.0 and 8.0 never update. The auto-update just "hangs" forever. The from-Adobe-dmg tells me that it cannot install the update, it's outside the installers abilities (or words to that effect).
Very frustrating...
Any thoughts how I might get Acrobat Professional 7.0 or 8.0 to update? Running a MacBook Pro with the latest OS X.
Thanks.

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
The manual updating process most be done in sequence. There are no combo
updaters. Hence it is 8.0, 8.1, 8.1.1, 8.1.2, 8.1.2SU

An archive and install comes to mind.

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
Have you tried downloading the patches from adobe.com and installing them without the updater?

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
Thanks.
Yes...
(1) In addition to repeatedly attempting to upgrade incrementally,
(2) I have tried updating with both (a) the Adobe automatic updater and (b) downloaded versions of the incremental upgrades.
No matter what I do, neither 7.0 nor 8.0 -- I have both! -- won't update.
I thought maybe this was just an 8.0 problem, so I reloaded 7.0. Same thing.
The not-updated versions of 7.0 and both appear to have problems (separately posted). Hence, I've gone back to 5.0 for "full functionality."
This has to be the strangest software problem I've ever had. Having no problems with any other programs, including the OS.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
When you try to apply the downloaded 8.1.0 patch on top of Acrobat 8.0.0, what happens? Is there an error message? Are you running Mac OS 10.4? 10.5?

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
Greetings.
I get a message like, "installation outside the parameters of this installer" (even when the installer is up-to-date), or, nothing. By "nothing" I mean the installer tries to do its job, hangs, and must be shut down eventually (by quitting the installer).
I am running OS X, the latest OS with most recent updates for security, etc.
Thanks.

Re: Cannot UPDATE 7.0 or 8.0
Troubleshooting
0) deactivate all background applications, espcially antvirus stuff and work on an ADMINaccount.
1) are you working from an Useraccount different from the account, from
which you installed acrobat ?
If so:
Please switch back to the original account, try updating from there.
If not:
Lets try the other way and create a new user account, then try again.
2) Did you update your Operating system after the installtion of Acrobat ?
If so:
reinstall so installtion and update would be launched from the OS with
exactly same Versions
3) Trials cannot be updated:
Eventually the product activation went wrong, activation information was not
correctly written to the system ? All products
first run as trials before you activate which cannot be updated.
Pls check with ADobe Support if deactivating and then activating your
product again will be ok.
4) Try updating in safe mode on new user account
Lauch your OS in Safe Mode, as far as I know on the mac you just keep
pressed the shift button when booting, right ? If you already have a new
user account, switch to that then.
5) Did you install from the orgianl setup which you became deliverd or did
you make some kind of back up ?
if back up: reinstall from orginal setup
6) Did you have Acrobat 5 on the system and then installed acro 7 over it ?
Do you have more then one version of Acro on the same system ?
They might conflict with each other, please check:
<http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=326272>
Attention: This doc is actually for windows, but might somehow be a clue for
mac too ?
8) if you had the correct update file for acro 7.0.1, then the filename
should be as follows. Have you had that filename ?
For Acro 7 std on mac : Acrobat-Std_701_Upd_Pkg.dmg
for ACro 7 pro on mac : Acrobat-Pro_701_Upd_Pkg.dmg
For 8 pls mind the language versions, i assume yours is english:
Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Professional update - English, French, German, and
Japanese:
AcroProUpd810_efgj.dmg
9) can you pls check if the downloaded file size of the updater files and
then files size which is presented on the website is the same ?
Link to the update site for acro:
product=1&platform=Macintosh
if not: actually the might naturally differ after saving to your hard disk,
if its a "big" difference: updater files damaged ? pls store to antoher HD,
have u enough disk space ?
10) have you applied registry cleaners while acro was installed ?
might have destryed activation information > may cause unexpected error
If so: reinstall

Wow! THANKS!
I am currently "on travel." I'll get to this ASAP.
(Just wanted to note this as it may be next week that I am able to get to it. Didn't want you to feel I'd ignored this or been ungrateful.)
Thanks again!
