Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
I have a word document created in Microsoft Word V.X Service Release 1. I also have OS 10.4.1 (tiger) installed. Before upgrading to Tiger, I was able to create PDF documents simply by pressing the Convert to PDF icon in the word document toolbar (I have Acrobat 6 Pro installed). Since upgrading, I get the following message: PDFMaker could not find all the required components. Please relaunch Acrobat to install the missing components. I relaunched both Acrobat and Distiller and this did not help.
When I upgraded to Tiger I did an archive and install. Did I loose something in the process that I haven't replaced.?
Any ideas on how to get this to work again?
Thanks,
Lou Hosta

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
Under the Help menu is an item Detect and Repair. Do you select it?
After doing that, fix permissions to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know Detect and Repair excisted. Unfortunately, it did not help. I also fixed permissions (still no go) and restarted without any luck.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
Here are a couple other things to try:
Can you manually generate a PDF with File->Print, and selecting the PDF printer? If so, then it's porbably the PDFMaker add-ins...
Are the PDFMaker templates in the Office directory? In Office 2004, the path should be Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Startup. There are directories for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - something with the title PDFMaker should be there.
I think the PDFMaker add-ins are user-specific, so you may want to try another user account.
You can always do a complete uninstall and re-install. I had to do that once (as per Adobe tech support) when none of my applications would generate a PDF via the PDF printer. Use the script that is posted elsewhere in this forum - it will completely wipe-out any trace of Acrobat.
Good luck.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
I have a similar problem that Acrobat Pro 6.0.2 on Tiger 10.4.1 with Word 11.1.1 will not make a single PDF for a document with section breaks in it.
Whichever way I try to create the PDF (either with "save as PDF" or click the PDF Maker icon in Word) I still get either a single page single file or one file per section of the document.
Adobe's support page says this is fixed in Word 10.1.4 but it seems it is back in 11.1.1
Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
Thanks for your reply Scott,
I can manually generate a PDF with File->Print, and selecting the PDF printer? It's a Preview doc. I know I can change it to an Adobe document but I loose hyperlinks etc. The PDFMaker templates are also in the Office X directory. The path is the same in Office X. There are also directories for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - PDFMaker.xxx is in each file. I'd rather not uninstall and re-install if I didn't have to. Is anyone else having this problem? I was kind of hoping that it was a bug and that some fix would be down the road. If no else is seeing this problem then I will delete Acrobat and reinstall. What about reinstalling Office? Could the problem be there? Ouch reinstalling Windows would be a real pain. I hope I NEVER have to do that.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
This is a problem due to the Microsoft non-standard printing
architecture. There is nothing we can do about it. I suggest trying
Apple's print to pdf to see if it works any better. If not, then try to
use a different application. There are many Mac WP applications Nisus
Writer that stores things in RTF format that can be read by anyone with
Microsoft Word (or any other serious WP application), Apple's Pages,
Mellel, Mariner Write, Apple/Claris Works, Open Office and the list goes on.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
Lou,
You might try tossing out the PDFMaker stuff in the Distiller package. Navigate to the Acrobat Distiller application icon in the Adobe Acrobat folder. Right- or Control-click on the Distiller icon and choose "Show Package Contents". Double click on the Contents folder and then Double-click on the Mac OS folder. Double-click on the Self Heal Files folder and at this point I would drag the PDFMaker folder to the trash. Relaunch Acrobat and run "Detect and Repair" again. It could be that the PDFMaker.dot, PDFMaker.ppa and the PDFMaker.xla files got hosed. The Self Healer will only check to see if they are there. It will not check to see if they are no good. Anyway, the Detect and Repair function will call the Self Healer. The Self Healer will see that these items are missing and re-install them from scratch. Of course, these files may be fine already, but its worth a try. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
sws,
I tried tossing out PDFMaker folder and then only the files within the folder. The Self Healer would not replace the files. I then re-installed 6.0.0 and upgraded to 6.0.3. I still was not able to click the word icon and make a pdf. So I deleted the Adobe PDF driver from the Printer Setup Utility and now I can't get it back. I tried both launching Acrobat and the manual method that was listed elsewhere on this forum. It appears that the option to "Option Click" on the Add button in Printer Setup is now gone under Tiger 10.4.1. I am now totally at a loss. I think this is an issue of Adobe, Microsoft, and Apple not playing together well. Hmm that doesn't surprise me! Do you have any other suggestion sws, or anyone else out there? I can't believe how much time I've spent on this already. I need to get some stuff done other that troubleshoot. Sometimes I think that I should never upgrade when everything is working OK.
Thanks,
Lou

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
A quick update to the above message. I rebooted and I now have the Adobe PDF Printer back. However, I still can't get word documents as mentionedin my initial post. I am back to the same problem that I had in my initial posting. This is after a reinstall and update of Acrobat 6 to 6.0.3. I'm tired and must quit for now.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
Lou,
If you set your printer to the Adobe PDF Printer, you can then use the "Print One Copy" button in the Acrobat toolbar. This is pretty much identical to what the PDFMaker macro does anyway. The great benefit of this route, IMHO, is that it seems to generate an identical PDF, and its much faster.
Sorry for the delayed response.

Re: Can't change a Microsoft word domument into a PDF since Tiger upgrade.
thanks sws and Raj,
I did the following as suggested below by another individual and it worked. I think it's similar to what you stated above, although new Tiger software doesn't have a 'make one copy' command, or at least one that I could find. Here is what I did. "Instead of hitting the PDF-toolbar icon in Word, I did File/Print in Word and then selected the Adobe PDF printer. To my surprise, this worked. URLs in the Word doc correctly become hyperlinks in the resultant PDF."
However, my URL's from the word doc do not become hyperlinks in the PDF. I must have a wrong setting somewhere. Sorry to keep asking questions, but do you have any ideas?
Thanks again,
Lou
