"Can't finish previewing" error

My illustrator is having problems with previewing. I can have a simple document with a just few shapes and a few lines of text and when I try to do something basic.... like zoom, or resize something I get a "can't finish previewing" error, and then I'm in Artwork mode. If I try to change it back to Preview mode I get the same error.
This is driving me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Thought I'd add that I'm using Illustrator 8.0 on a Mac OSX 10.3.2 - classic mode.

Allocate more memory and perhaps your internet cache needs to be trashed.

I've changed it to a different font and it seems to have fixed the problem. It's when it's working with basic Arial or Helvetica that it doesn't work. I have tonnes of memory, and just completed a complicated drawing, so I think it was a problem with my fonts.??
Anyway.. problem solved temporarily.

Substitute the Arial and helvetica True Fonts in the system fonts with a postscript version.
