cant make text wrap

I started this morning (haha?). and on and off all day I've been coming back into the help files, then ignoring the bloody help files, and still trying to make text wrap around a shape.

I follow the instructions very carefully.
I end up with my original shape, now with an 'outer outline' around it, and the text just does not wrap around that object.

If I am missing something, it honestly means that the help files are wrong, because i'm following them exactly:

step 1 - draw a shape on layer 1
step 2 - type some text on layer 1
step 3- make sure the shape is ABOVE the text on the SAME LAYER
step 4- select the shape you want the text to wrap around
step 5- go into Object > text wrap> make text wrap
step 6- ask why adobe would make the simplest task so f*ing INHUMAN!
step7 - go back into FREEHAND and get the same job done in about 3 seconds.

any help would be great.

By text wrap, do you mean changing the shape of text to fit the the object made?

Something like distorted text that you would get with the envelope feature?

Mike this has been posted so many times, Dee he doesn't have the text in a text frame. He is trying to wrap point type.

Mike it is not going to work if you don't draw a text frame and enter your text.

Dee Mike might be one of these FreeHand users who come to the AI forum for the purpose of…well it is hard to figure out why…I think is a secret society called "We Can Do It In FreeHand Association of America" aka WCDIIFAA.

I know that is crazy, that's my point!

This was just posted last week, he could have done a search and quickly found the answer.

and yes- I'd been using freehand and fireworks for quite some time because of the seamlessness with flash.
And just recently 'graduated' into the more advanced world of the adobe products.
The reason I'm not in a 'secret society' is the same reason I'm going to tell you now that when you talk ABout me, in my presence, it makes you look like a mule.

Well Mike then since you are new why didn't you wait for the answer before you attacked. You see it sounds a little odd! No?!

You should first do a search on the forum before posting to see if the subject has been covered and if the answer is available if it has not or if you could not find the answer why not just ask the question without waiting for the answer.

Here this is what some one wrote who called me a mule!

Alright already...

you can't expect me to convert 100% on my first week...

however...this suite of creative programs is pretty incredible indeed.
if it makes you feel any better, I haven't used freehand since i bought cs. heehee

You might with patience find the AI forum has some very knowledgeable contributers who as you might guess are a little bus and might take a while to respond. But search is a good way to save time because most problems are repeats.

Oh yes this particular Forum is not that active on the weekends.
