"Can't open this illustration" error - Illustrator CS - Windows

I seem unable to open any of my .ai or .pdf files in Illustrator...is there some simple setting that may have changed by itself? I seem to be able to open the one I want to work on in Photoshop and ImageReady, but not Illustrator!

I am an experienced AI user, but just upgraded to the CS suite. I'm running it on Windows XP Home with 1GB Ram, and NV34 Video card.

If you have experienced this, and have a fix, please let me know.

What error message are you seeing when you try to open a file? Also, how are
you attempting to open them, by double-clicking on the file or from the menu
File>Open?

The error read exactly "Can't open the illustration" period.
I have tried both methods to open them. I found after re-booting a few times, I could open my files again, and today I can open them no problem. (I don't get it)
I also often have trouble launching Illustrator on the first try...I never had this problem in AI9.

It sounds as though either you have a conflict with something else on your
machine (possibly a driver) or a bad installation.

I would first of all try an uninstall/re-install.

AI CS bug?

When I use the Convert Anchor Tool to make corrections on a drawing, there seems to be a high frequency of AI shutdowns (perhaps 3/10 trials). Has anyone else had this problem with AI CS.

I am running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 at 2.8 ghz.

Hi,

Have you tried this:
Check language setting in "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced > ... language version of non-unicode programs..."?
Setting to "English (US)" (have to restart) seems to solve the problems.

By some reason Ill CS "eats" almost all GDI resources with other codepage settings.
