Default Can't save the illustration. The file is locked.

One of our Illustrator 10 user intermitently get "Can't save the illustration. The file is locked. Use the Properties command in Windows Explorer to unlock the file. ID = -45".

Very perculiar as the user would create the illustration and successfully save and close. Then later the same day open and edit and upon saving the message appears.

It can happen at any time but not necessarily the same way.

There appears to be no knowledge base articles specific to ID -45.

We have rebuilt the machine from scratch and it still occurs.

I get the same problem. My drawing and suddenly it won't let me save...file
locked. So I save a copy. Exit Illustrator and try to delete the original
file so I can rename the copy and the system won't let me. Tells me the
file is in use. I have to reboot my computer, then delete and rename. This
happens all the time. I hope they fix this soon.

If you search this forum, you will find this mentioned quite a bit. One possible solution bandied about is to delete the aiicon.dll file, though this has some minor drawbacks.

I personally have not tried this, as when I get this error, if I just wait a day or two, I seem to regain the ability to delete/change the file.

Peter: This ocassionally happens to me, rebooting the computer solves the problem. I think Windows Explorer gets involved for some reason and the application cannot do anything with the file. Had this occur with Acrobat and Photoshop.

This is happening to me ALL THE TIME!! ...and its driving me nuts. I am having to keep a list of the junk files and the new (renamed) ones so I can later try to delete the old ones and rename the new ones to the correct name.

    Very annoying!

    Rebooting does nothing for me.

If it is a consistent problem, you might want to give the deleting aiicon.dll route a try.

I have renamed the aiicon.dll and will monitor the effectiveness of this solution. As this has be an intermittent problem I would say that if the locking problem hasn't occurred in 4 weeks then its safe to assume it worked.

After searching the forum on aiicon.dll issues I must admit the answers did not come across confidently. I would like to know who and how aiicon.dll was identified as the culprit and why Adobe do not wish to resolve this problem.

    Peter,

It has never been acknowledged that there may be a problem with the
aiicon.dll, or that removing it cures the problem of 'locked' files.

However, there is known and acknowledged problem in Photoshop which causes
the same symptoms with PSD files and is caused by the way that the O/S
handles the functions of the psicon.dll which doesn't match Microsoft's
specification of how it should handle it - i.e. an O/S bug. In the case of
Photoshop, psicon.dll has been removed from PhotoshopCS, as it proved
impossible to work round this O/S bug without seriously compromising
Photoshop (or Windows Explorer - I'm not sure which) performance .

With this in mind, I asked a user here to try renaming the aiicon.dll (as a
diagnostic) to see if, as with Photoshop, it cured the problem of locked
    files.

I have not yet seen a reply here to say that it definitely DOES cure the
problem, although there have been some postings that suggests it may.

    Thanks Len

One thing I didn't consider, since our issue occurs in a networking environment should I disable aiicon.dll only with the troubled Illustrator user or should this be done for all Illustrator users? If so, do I need to include also Adobe users i.e. Photoshop, Indesign?
Does Indesign have a similar dll?

    Peter,
    >>should I disable aiicon.dll only with the troubled Illustrator user<<
As removing the aiicon dll impacts on the user in as much as they lose
previews in Windows Explorer, I really wouldn't do it on machines that are
not experiencing locked-file difficulties. The same applies to Photoshop.

It is not an issue with InDesign

Default problems copying or renaming files unlock delete files

unlock and delete path too long files

When you are having problems with deleting, copying or renaming files
on your computer, you should get an effective tool. You can find
Windows tool to delete or copy folders and files with errors such as
path too long or the filename too long. Basically search the file and
then press the button to delete or copy it. Path too long application
solves problems with the capacity to delete or copy files and folders
with the long paths in Explorer. At times, errors are created by
software programs, virus, adware and more.
