Can't See Text in Design View
Can you help? My pages are displaying properly on the Web and in preview, but
all I can see in Dreamweaver is a small table with links which usually lives at
the bottom of each page. All pages in the site are behaing like this.
Everything was fine a couple of weeks ago. The same thing happens when ftping
to a new site on another machine. There are no CSS styles or templates in
use.:confused; Jay

Re: Can't See Text in Design View
Which DW?
Are you using SSI on the page? Do your SSI fragment files contain <html>,
<head>, or <body> tags?

Re: Can't See Text in Design View
Hi
It is Dreamweaver 8. I think I may have found the answer, though it is a bit
strange. When I deleted a library item, the rest ofthe text appeared. The
library item appears to be corrupt, sending a message about a corrupt jpg -
though I took out the image and it did not mend. Unnfortunately unless you
have a better idea, it looks as though I shall have to recreate the library
items and work on the coded page of all the pages on my site, to replace the
item with a mended version.
Not sure what SSI is I'm afraid.

Let's start from scratch. Can you show me the page that doesn't display
properly in DW, please?

Re: Can't See Text in Design View
Here it is. I am in fact trying to mend this web site for a friend who seems
to have used a large library item on all her pages. Dreamweaver has thrown up
several errors re redundant tags, but none of them seem to make a significant
difference. I wonder if it is hte link to the Vista image that has caused the
trouble.

Re: Can't See Text in Design View
How comfortable are you with HTML? You've got a job on your hands that will
require some level of proficiency here -

Re: Can't See Text in Design View
Hello Ace
yes, I can manage HTML if I concentrate hard. Thank you for the link to the
www.org validator. Surely though Dreamweaver's validator is highlighting the
faults? The thing is, these problems seem to have occured on every page, so it
will take ages to correct. I seem to be able to get back to normal by placing
a new Library item into the code for each page.
I am planning to help the site owner to swap everything over to templates
because it seems to me that library items are not usually used for whole chunks
of code as they have been here, and that may be causing Dreamweaver to trip up.
Perhaps you have a view on this.
Thanks for your help and your very prompt response.

I don't use Library items normally, since I thing server-side includes are a
much better approach, but I can tell you for sure that a properly made
Library item should not cause you any problems in a properly made page. The
fact that you are having problems suggests to me that there is some coding
issue that we have not yet identified.
To say more, I would have to see more of your code - before and after, for
example.
