Can't Snap Guides to Pixels

Default Can't Snap Guides to Pixels

When creating guides, I want to have them line up with the pixel marks on the ruler. 90% of the time they do not! I can get them to be a hair away from either side of the pixel line in the ruler.

The problem then is that when I want to create a selection, the selection jumps to the next pixel line on the ruler that the guide is on the side of. Kind of hard to explain, but it makes it so I can't just run a selection with "snap to guides" set because the guides aren't exactly on the pixel lines.

How do I get them ALL on pixel lines on the ruler!??

    David,

Part of my reason for posting, is to understand and learn from your question.
I am one step above "newbie" status---that can be a precarious position---just when you think you "know" something, you realize you don't!

When you talk about getting guides to be on "pixel lines of ruler"--are you talking about having the guides be set at an exact measurement that coincides with the ruler markings?

If so, I find that rather than trying to drag my guide to a very specific measurement on the ruler, I utilize the View>New Guide>and then I set the measurement numerically as in horizontal 1.375" etc.

Dragging is not an exact process, where as numerical values are right on.

I would appreciate you posting back, because some of the "stuff" I'm trying to accomplish in photoshop deals with exact measurements for printing for a die-cut machine.

Patty – Photoshop is brilliant at this, you dont have to manually type anything.

    • First of all turn on Snap to Guides - Mathias didnt mention this

    • Now move to a blank layer - (this will mean that your guides won't snap to anything else in the image).

    • Set your rulers by right clicking on the ruler and choosing a measurement

    • Hold down SHIFT and move your guide. It will snap to PRECISELY the ruler increment. How detailed this is, is dependant on your zoom level.

Remember you can also use the Grid system instead if all of your guides are equally spaced.

The View > New Guide feature is just great. I had never noticed that little puppy! It is just what I always have wanted---and to think it was right there under my nose. It even splits pixels into fractions. Wow! Thanks.

Playing further with this new (for me)toy at 1600% magnification with ruler ticks at every pixel, I find that although I can locate a vertical guide line at any fraction of the interval between ruler ticks, when I set "Snap to guides" and draw a horizontal line via the line tool---even with anti-alias turned off---the starting point of the line snaps to the nearest ruler tick rather than to the vertical guideline.

Being literal-minded, I have to ponder---why doesn't the line snap to the guideline itself, as advertised.

Remember you can also use the Grid system

Except a pixel in a grid is not a pixel on the rulers, which makes things very complicated!

It helps me to make sure the info tab is showing. Then when I'm dragging a guide I can see what the exact position is. Handy for other tasks too.

    Oops, two messages for one.

For me it helps to have the info palette showing. Then I can see the exact position of the guide as I move it. Works wonders for other measurements too.

If your guides are messed up a bit, like halfway a pixel, you can make a slice. Slices always snap to pixels. Then just enable snapping to slices and let your guide snap to the slice. Remove the temporary slice and you're done.
I'd prefer a Snap to > Pixels option though.
