    Default Can't unto smart quotes

I turn the smart quotes on and off and on and off again and i can't get CS to turn off smart quotes...

in 10, it's turned on but when i do an apostrophe (sp) it gives me the regular tick mark and then if i watned the 'smart' quotes, i can manually put them in with apple shift bracket or something like that...

but now in CS it's seems to be the smart quotes all the time and no way to put the non smart quotes in at all... is this part of the new text engine also???? what's going on with my quotation marks...

    I believe it's a bug in CS.

    p1kuo,

Go to File>Document Setup>Type, and deselect "Use Typographer's Quotes". That should do the trick.

I believe changing the setting Bob rightly points you to will only give you
dumb quotes in type you set after making the change. It will not change
    existing quotes in the file.

    Good point, Doug.

p1kuo: If you have existing smart quotes that you need to "dumb-down," try using the Find and Replace command (under the Edit menu). It's a little cumbersome, but will save you a lot of time if you have many smart quotes to deal with.

forum wasn't loading fri-night... just checking your guy's answers now...

thanx bob, the Document setup > Type > typographers quotes, did the trick.

I was clicking and unclicking the smart quotes check box in the smart punctuaction pop-up box to no avail.

though now i can't do that key-board short-cut to get the 'smart' quotes back... but then there is always the glyphs palette...

    thanx all.

Huh? You should be able to use command-[ or ] or shift-command [ or ] to
get smart punctuation back any time no matter what you choose in Document
    setup>Type.

Tried it before I posted #6 above, and it worked. Tried it again just now,
    and it worked.

    1. Open new document.

    2. Document Setup>Type>Use Typographer's Quotes unchecked.

    3. Set a line of type with double quotes in it.

    4. Select beginning quotes with Type tool.

    5. Press option-[. Selection changes to typographer's quotes.

    6. Select end quotes, press option-shift-[. Dumb to smart again.

    Also works with single quotes.

Just reread my Post #6. What DOESN'T work is COMMAND-[ or ]. That was my
dumb mistake. (But command was never the age old Mac shortcut key for smart
quotes... it's been the option key)

(Wonder if there's something in Document Setup to change dumb typing mistakes
    to smart ones.)

I was hoping for the same thing, I usually don't use AI to compose text I mostly import preferring to use a word processor or InDesign for that and the using paragraph or character styles.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been pulling my hair out trying to not use smart quotes since we need inch and foot marks (I know, dumb quotes are not inch marks, I've been berated about that already.)

I thought I looked in document setup, but there it is.

    Thanks.
