Cant use the filter effects...is it me or is it the software?

Whats Up:

Im following along with the "Classroom in a book" series, and everytime i am supposed to add an effect (drop shadow or distort, etc.) the filter is dimmed, and i cannot select it. Like I said, I am following along word for word, action for action with the book, so I am almost positive It's not me missing something. Any idea what's wrong?

Is your object selected before you go to the filter drop down?

By the way, good for you for working through the Classroom in a Book. It's a great way to get started.

Set your document color mode to RGB . They will probably work then .

Drop shadow and distort both work on CMYK as well as RGB objects, but you must be using the effects above the midline in the dropdown list. The selections below the line are for rasters.

The blur, pixelate and sharpen tools, in effects, below the line, works for CMYK as well...
