Case Sensitive query - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

A simple set of statements ----------------------------- Declare str varchar(50) set str='Nurullah' select STR ---------------- gives me an error 'STR not declared' WHY? How can I make SQL SQerver 2000 Standard edition to work for this?...

    Declare str varchar(50)
    set str='Nurullah'
    select STR
    ----------------

    Running Rebuildm utility would allow you to change the collation. I would
    suggest you take a look at the following link to get a better handle on how
    collation is implemented in sqlserver.

    Isn't switching a system's case sensitivity a good way to break existing
    code? Perhaps it wouldbe worth investigating why it is case sensitive before
    changing it.

    Yup. Although sql2k supports collation down to column level, changing a
    system wide level would require a rerun of setup or rebuild master. It's
    definitely not a child-play. One ought to be able to justify the need for a
    system change.
