cd player crashes in linux but not windows - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

On a dual boot box w/ winXP on hda and rh8 on hdb a CD(.cda) plays no problem with win-amp or media player, but on the linux side either crashes the box or there's no sound. Mp3s play fine on both OSes however. You should probably try to update your kernel. If your using RedHat just
goto www.rpmfind.net and download the Rawhide kernel RPM. There have been
some problems with certain chipsets and playing sound. If you update the
kernel, it'll have some dependencies, you also need to download/update
modutils, kernel-dev, and probably a few others.

If that doesn't help. Reply with OS and Kernel versions, and type of
soundcard.
