CD problem on iMac 333 - Mac Applications & Software

Hi friends, We have a strange problem with an iMac 333 here, it doesn't want to read self-burned data CDs (and wants to format them, like macs used to do long ago with IBM floppies). This happens with CDs I burned and CDs I got from others; Re-writable CD, burned on the same machine, work perfectly! I tried the original system 8 the machine was shipped with, and my good old sys 9.1 I work with on my other macs, but nothing seems to help. What's going on? Do I miss some extension? What can I update? Thanks Eyal...

Default CD problem on iMac 333

    Hi friends,

We have a strange problem with an iMac 333 here, it doesn't want to

Very common problem with two likely causes:

    1. The iMac does not like the brand of blank CD you are using. There is a BIG
difference between different brands of blanks! Verbatim and TDK are among the
best; Memorex and "no-name" brands, the worst. (My iMac 333 will very often
    refuse to read Memorex CDs.)

    2. The laser lens on your CD-ROM drive is dirty. This happens a LOT on
tray-loading iMacs, because the lens is exposed when the tray is open. Clean
the lens (gently!) with alcohol, or use a commercial CD-ROM cleaning kit on it.
