CD-RW stops working with 2.4.20? - Debian

I recently upgraded from kernel 2.2.x to 2.4.20 (to get support for the Promise ATA/133 controller). Now I can't burn CD's. I have my boot drive on the motherboard's IDE controller, channel 0, two CD drives, a reader and the RW drive, on channel 1, and a 20 gig Maxtor drive on the Promise card's channel 0. Everything works great, unless I try to burn CD's. I can mount a CD-ROM in either optical drive and read them just fine. However, even if I modprobe ide-scsi, sr_mod, and sg, "cdrecord -scanbus" reports no SCSI devices and neither it nor cdrdao ...

Default CD-RW stops working with 2.4.20?

I recently upgraded from kernel 2.2.x to 2.4.20 (to get support for the
    Promise ATA/133 controller). Now I can't burn CD's.

I have my boot drive on the motherboard's IDE controller, channel 0, two CD
drives, a reader and the RW drive, on channel 1, and a 20 gig Maxtor drive
on the Promise card's channel 0.

Everything works great, unless I try to burn CD's. I can mount a CD-ROM in
either optical drive and read them just fine. However, even if I modprobe
ide-scsi, sr_mod, and sg, "cdrecord -scanbus" reports no SCSI devices and
neither it nor cdrdao can write to the drive.

    Frustrating.

    Any suggestions?

Are you sure hdd is the correct drive? What does dmesg say?

Most likely ide-cd is starting before ide-scsi and grabbing your CDROM
device. At least this is the case with 2.4.18-k7 on my box.

I have a file /etc/modutils/cdrw with the following contents:

    # First, get the ide-cd drive to not latch onto /dev/hdd
    options ide-cd ignore=hdd
    #
    #
    # Set up an alias for /dev/scd0 to load sr_mod
    alias scd0 sr_mod
    #
    #
    # Now get ide-cd followed by ide-scsi loaded before the SCSI drivers
    pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi
    pre-install sr_mod modprobe ide-scsi
    pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd
    # end of cdrw file

Run update-modules and when you boot the next time everything should
be okay (note that hdd is my CDRW drive).

    Cheers!

    Yes.

    hdd: CD-RW IDE1610, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
    hdd: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)

I can mount disks in it, it's definitely hdd.

The 2.4.x kernels are very modular and so you have to take a little
more care about how, when and in what order things are loaded. The
2.2.x kernels had a lot more built into the kernel image. The nice
thing about the 2.4.x kernels is once you figure out how the module
system works you (well, at least I) don't really need to build custom
    kernels.

    Cheers!
