Default cfquery, timeout attribute and cfserver timeout setting

On our server, CFMX 6.1, we have an option setting for timeout requests as120
seconds. Then in my query, I tried replacing the timeout setting to 300
seconds, but the query always timeouts at 120 seconds. Is there something I
miss? How come my query timeouts at the server setting and not my query
    setting?

I just need to know. There has to be a simple or complicated explanation. Any
which way that will satisfy my curiousity.

    Thanks in advance..

    This from

"Optional. The maximum number of milliseconds for the query to execute before
returning an error indicating that the query has timed-out. This attribute is
not supported by most ODBC drivers. timeout is supported by the SQL Server 6.x
or above driver. The minimum and maximum allowable values vary, depending on
    the driver."
