A mask is just a greyscale. So black is 100% opaque and white is 0%. Choose 50% grey [127:127:127] and you get the effect of 50% opacity.
There are probably 2 other ways to do this ...

For changing Opacity (and color) of your Quick Mask...double click on the right icon directly below the Foreground/Background swatches in the Toolbox, or on the Quick Mask channel in the Channels Palette.
To change those properties in a regular mask, double click on the Mask Channel in the Channels Palette, or on the icon for the mask in the Layers Palette.
