changed vtoc on live system disk - Sun Solaris

Just inherited a bizarre problem. Somehow (I believe thru user error) the vtoc has been changed on the system disk. The machine has gone from having 3 partitions on it to just one big partition defined. The DB fucntions on the box but most commands (including vi,more, truss) don't. So the system functions to some extent but it's clearly hanging by a thread. I have a copy of the original vtoc from an explorer output. Is it possible to reapply that vtoc with `ftmhard -s` and have the disk function again? I know the VTOC is only the 1st 20 ...

I know the VTOC is only the 1st 20 bytes of the hard drive.

Or is my only option keeping the original vtoc and doing a restore from backups?

Not sure I follow about the 1st slice piece. The system disk is just UFS,
    no logging, no solstice etc...

It's a poorly configured sysrtem. The DB is under veritas control but
they didn't bother to mirror the disk. I'm guessing someone ran a veritas
command or was trying to do some disk configuration and changed the vtoc on
    the system disk by accident.

I'll run fmthard -s and see if I can apply the original vtoc to the disk
    and if that repairs things.

I don't think I can reliably read the data. If I so much as type in
'ls' I get a "Bus Error". Most commands won't even execute.

I'm going to reload Sol8 with the same disk layout and restore with
    Netbackup.
