Default Changing position of illustrator EPS in Quark 6.1

When I save an Illustrator EPS from version 9 to CS and I update my illustration box in Quark 6.1 the EPS position changes. The coordinates of the box stay the same as before the new import. I don't know if this is an Illustrator CS or Quark 6.1 problem.

I hope someone recognizes this problem and can tell me what to do about it.

Sounds like another QuarkXPress 6.x bug.

Go to the QuarkXPress forum ;-)

It may be a bug, or you (or the program) may be doing something that you are unaware of. It's hard to say from here. If you are interested, I'll tell you how I use Illustrator and Quark (or any page layout app) a little differently.

The placement coordinates in Quark are based on the physical size of the eps, measured from the points that are the highest, and farthest to the left. This includes things that are not visible, like stray points, ascenders of fonts, and objects with no fill and stroke. You can see this if you make an Illustrator eps with a lower-case letter c at 72 points, place it in a Quark picture box positioned so that the top of the c is at the top of the box, outline the font in Illustrator (resave) and update the eps in Quark. You will see that the image moves because the top of the eps is now the top of the c, and not the top of the ascender in the 72 point font.

A technique that some people use is to make a box with no fill or stroke around an image that will act as a bounding box. You could, for instance, center your art in Illustrator, and make a box around it that is also centered in Illustrator, only larger than the image. When you place it in Quark, you can center the image in the box with command-shift-M, and things like outlining fonts won't change it's position.
