    funny, someone asked me just the other day how to do this. I said I didn't
    know, but I bet you could do it with NetInfo Manager.

    to check it out, I popped into NM, called up a user, and indeed I could
    edit the short name user field. however, I didn't actually change anything,
    didn't click "save." based on the relative complexity of the instructions
    given at the URL above, I assume that if I had done so, it would have
    broken things?

    The NetInfo database isn't the only place where the short username
    string is used. It is (part of) the name for other files and is
    contained within still other files.
