    Default Chapter names in header

    Hi Everyone

I want to put the chapter name in the header - so that the relevant chapter name appears at the top of each page within that chapter. (I'm using Indesign 2.0.2)

Is there any way of doing this automatically or would I have to create a separate master for each chapter?

    Thanks

    Not true, actually.

Add a text frame to the master (left and right sides) where you want the chapter title to appear. Make it wide enough to hold the longest chapter name.

Don't put any text into them. Instead, click inside each with the Type tool and Insert Special Character: Section Marker.

You'll see the word "Section" appear. Format it so it looks how you want the chapter name styled.

Now go back to your document pages. Make the first page of each chapter a section start, including page 1 (if it's a chapter start). For each chapter's section start, in the Numbering & Section Options dialog, leave it set to Automatic Page Numbering, but in the Section Marker field, enter the title of the chapter. It's a short field but you can enter characters beyond that ... I think it holds at least 100 characters.

That's it. When ID sees a new section starting, it replaces the "Section" placeholder with what you've entered in the Section Marker field, and continues with that text until the next section is encountered.
