Default Character property options are "greyed-out"

I can no longer manually enter Character settings after selecting text. I can use the 'greyed-out' drop-down selections but can no longer type a value ??? (InDesign 2.02 PC)

Been known to happen. Usually quiting and relauncing ID will fix this.
    Sometimes a reboot is needed.

FWIW, I haven't seen this at all in ID CS.
