    Default CHINESE TEXT

    Hello-
I was recently requested to take a comic I created in English in Illustrator and translate into Chinese.
The client gave me Chinese text in Word, but when opened in my WORD on mac...I get nothing but underlines and doesn't paste in Illustrator...

My client can see Chinese text, but they are on a PC.

Any solutions? How can I get this job out?

    Thank you

Yes there is a solution. You go to the System Preferences and open the International pane and then you select the input tab and you then check off the Chinese languages you'll the see an American Flag or small window icon right of the help in the menu bar. That's a drop down list you select the chinese flag of choice I think there are three. OK now you go to either Word or AI to either open the file or place it but before doing so select a Chinese Font and size.

    Wade-
I actually opened text from WORD in browser. (Clicked Earth mag. icon in menu bar)
All showed in Chinese...so copied and pasted in Ilustrator...

    This seems to work.

Now I believe we need to purchase russian & Arabic fonts...

I had no problem and sent you an eps file. Must be something about our different set ups?

BTW I almost never a problem opening a foreign language file unless I don't have font in that language? Lot's of people seem to have this problem, don't know why!

For anyone else having this problem this is the solution to getting the Chinese Character Text into AI 10.

OK Wade this is what you do open the word document
select all the text even the lines and nonsense then Select Apple MyungJo as the font
and it will convert all the nonsense to Chinese then select all the text copy and paste into a text frame in an AI 10 document and you have editable Chinese text in AI 10.

Make sure you have the same font or a Chinese font selected before pasting into AI 10.

Opening a PC Word document on the Mac that uses foreign language characters is a pain. It rarely works. The problem lies in the fact that the characters in a PC typeface that uses special characters are mapped different on the keyboard compared to the Mac. The Mac cannot access these "extra" characters unless you do some major surgery with the font (e.g., Fontographer). I am unsure if this has been addressed with Mac OS X Panther.

Unless you have a font that addresses this problem the only work around is to have the person save the PC file as a postscript file (with the fonts embedded). Have them open the postscript file up in Illustrator and convert the text to outlines. Unfortunately your formatting options are limited. You could also ask them to embed the font into the Illustrator file instead of convert to outline but I am not sure if the Chinese characters would stay in tact once you open the Illustrator file up on your Mac. You could also ask them to send you the postscript file if they do not have Illustrator but again I am not sure if the Chinese characters would be preserved. I would think so.

    I hope this helps.

Charlton I was able to open the document fine in Word and assign Fang Song to it and it converted the lines into Chinese characters just fine and I was able to use that to
copy and paste into AI 10 and that worked fine as well. Formatting seemed lost though.

Wade will be able to work with this.
