Chinese XML problem - Adobe Indesign Windows

XP SP2, ID 3.01, first build. I'm unable to export Chinese Pinyin to XML properly. All characters which have a tone mark display a small box when opened in a browser. If I substitute Times New Roman for the character set, I get most of the tone marked fonts except for the inverted ^ (carrot). Any suggestions? Thanks for any help. Jim...

As XML does not include font info, it all depends on the font you choose in the browser. Arial unicode should show them all.

Which characters don't show? What are their unicodes. The caron is on 9 of the pinyin characters. On my machine, the Times New Roman has them all.

    Hi Teus,

    The ones that don't export properly are: (a^caron = 1277, e^caron =1268, i^caron = 1279, o^caron = 1281, u^caron = 1283, and u with umlau = 1291).

And yes, you're right, they contained within the Times New Roman set, as glyphs, but for some reason, aren't rendering when exporting to XML.

I've searched this forum for similarly posted problems, but didn't find anyone else with this issue.

    Jim,

I don't know where you have these numbers from. The Pinyin range goes from U01CD till U01DC, decimal 461 till 476.

But anyway, if I include those characters in an ID doent and export as XML, Internet Explorer shows blocks. But if I load the file as UTF8 in Notepad, all is well. (You get the same by choosing View > Source in Internet Explorer.) So the produced UTF8 is allright.

    Hi Tues,

Yep, you're right. We did a round-trip test.

InDesign>XML (Pinyin with caron shows as a box)>Import XML to InDesign, all Pinyin comes back in correctly.

I can only conclude, as I do with all computer related funkyness, it was the Flying Spaghetti Monster's fault.
