CJK in Illus 9, running Win XP
ok, now i am stuck in illustrator (V.9). how can i place chinese fonts properly ? my source is from MS Word 2003, I am running Win XP with Chinese IME installed. what i have tried to do :
- copied chinese text from msword, invoked text tool in illus., paste it there, "?????" came up. i tried changing the font to 'SimSun'- windows chinese IME font first, and paste again : it works to a certain extent; i.e. the fonts appear, but some of it does not
- copied from msword, pasted it in PS 7, everything displays nicely there, then i copy to Illus,, most words appear, but some comes up as numbers or symbols. when i highlight these rogue text, they show me default Roman fonts, tried changing them back to "SimSun", it does not work.
would just like to know if there is a more direct way to do this ?
thanks much,
Scott.

Re: CJK in Illus 9, running Win XP
LMY,
This has been asked and answered here many times.
Unfortunately, the forum search function seems to be broken right now. When it's working again, try searching with the key words CJK, Chinese, and Asian.
Bottom line: Illustrator support for Unicode has been poor at best through version 10. Support for Windows IMEs has been nonexistent. It is my understanding that version 11 (CS) is much improved in this regard, but someone with direct experience will have to confirm.
In particular, for IL versions through 10, copying and pasting text from an Asian MS Word documents has always required workarounds, such as first copying into Photoshop or InDesign.
