Default Clicking on Illustrator 10 File opens Illustrator but not the file

A client tries to open an Illustrator File (***.ai) by clicking on the file itself. Usually this is not a problem. I think most people open an application this way.
However when he clicks on the file, Illustrator opens but the file doesn't.
However if he drags and drops one of two things happens:
    1. The file will open
Illustrator opens and the file is moved to the Illustrator 10 Folder in Applications

Once the file was actually deleted totally off the computer.

    Any ideas?

If it was OS 9.x I'd say rebuild your desktop. What OS?

It actually MOVES the original ai file? I have never heard of that anywhere before.

Have you tried opening the file from within ai? If that doesn't work, then there's probably something going on either with a corrupt file or possibly OS X permissions. ?

But the file moving thing sounds like something else altogether, like a rogue AppleScript, a bad system directory structure, or something worse. :-/

I have seen the files disappear when you drag and drop on to the application icon before (OS 9). Have you had a look in the Illustrator folder as they quite often turn up there?

Rebuilding the desktop does sometimes help.
