Very sorry, there is an error in step 2 of my previous post.

Method #1 for getting closed path from overlapping lines
    1. Select strokes. Expand Stroke by 0.25 point. Leave selected.
    2. Xtras > Path Operations > Union (not Divide as previously written). This
    gives you a composite path.
    3. Modify > Split composite path. While all the pieces are still selected,
shift-click to deselect areas you wish to save. Delete the rest.

Judy has given you a couple of good suggestions; here's another way
    to go:

    1) Using the Pen tool add points to each path at the intersection points.

    2) Select both points on one path, Split, and delete the ends; repeat
    for each path.

    3) Area-select the points that meet at each corner, and Join; when
done make sure the path is marked as closed in the Inspector.

One more suggestion... less acurate but much quicker:
With the trace tool (magic wand) set to 2 grays, click once inside your
desired area to obtain a selection edge, click a second time and choose
    'convert selection edge'.
