Nice pics! Do you mind telling us how far the flies would have been from the
    front element of the lens?

    Cheers - Rab.

Probably around 15cm. Thats the minimum focusing distance. However, the
closest you get to minimum focusing distance on this lens, the greater the
magnification, so it was in reality a little more than a normal 100mm lens
    would have magnified.

bit 'soft' in areas but overall nice stuff!

Soft eh? :) I could have sharpened the bejesus out of them but I chose not
to, in my opinion they look sharp enough as is. I can assure you though,
they're not soft. You're probably just referring to areas that are out of
focus, its damn difficult to get full in-focus coverage of a three
dimensional object in 1:1 macro photography without a macro flash. And even
then it wouldn't be particularly easy.

Those photos were taken with an aperture of about f/6.7 and 1/250th to
1/350th of a second exposure (at ISO 400). I probably could have gone down
an f-stop and taken some sharp photos, but not as many.

could pin point certain areas but i'd be here all day and it's hardly

    why not as many?

Fair enough. I would still be interested to know what you're referring to
though, because I can't see it. The only thing I can see is n highlights
where what looks like some sort of liquid on the fly's back has created a
sort of 'square'ish white dot. Is that what you mean? Still, you'd have to
be looking pretty hard to see it.

Compromise between wide depth of field and fast enough shutter speed to
capture the shot without any blur. If I tightened the aperture, the shutter
speed would have dropped to maybe 1/125th of a second and given the
magnification and the fact that I was handholding it in an unbalanced
position a lot of the time, it probably would have blurred significantly.
