Sorry, I thought it would be in there somewhere. I've not needed it, so
    haven't looked.

No problem, Peter; I have found an article that says that this codec
hasn't been ported for OS X, it's only available for Classic, as an
extension for QT. I cannot be able to install it under 9, so I'm giving
    it up!

Yes; there are several codecs that work in 9 and not in 10. That's why I
have them installed in my OS9 extensions and keep QT5 Pro to run in
Classic/10.2.6, where they work absolutely fine.

I've tried running VPC in 10.2.6, to replace them, but it's been a dead
    loss.

    VPC/VLC.

    Drat.

Actually, I did once run SoftWindows 95 on a G3/266 with OS 8.1, and it
played some .avis that none of the Mac-type codecs would play, so VPC/Win98
would probably work. But it's not really worth it for me because it's (1)
expensive and (2) large. And I suppose that it's (3) slow.

Sadly that version of SWindows 95 won't run over OS 9, so I can't install
it on my TiBook which is a pity; as a Windows environment it was superbly
    compatible with the real thing.

You can't - Intel never released the Indeo 5 codec for OS X.

And it's not a .mpg if it's using that codec, it's a .avi

Sounds like it is an MPEG2 video, which means it should play properly in mplayer
and VLC (latest version is 0.6.2).

or it's more likely that it's not really a .mpg, given 1)

I don't know what it is, but I have discovered it's audio only (a great
stereo recording of a Pink Floyd 1972 london show); plays fine in iTunes
only; iTunes says it's encoded 128Kbps so i belive it's an .mp3; Sound
Studio nor any othe appl. can open it, nor even trying to import it with
    QTime...

In iTunes, get info, and look at the summary, it will show you what format it is.

Mpeg-1 layer 3; so it's an mp3, but all the applications that usually
open mp3s don't work for this one; it definitely misses a QT component.
Pity though, as it's 48 minutes long (the whole show), I can't edit it
and I hate long music files, as I can never get to the track I want...

Perhaps if you changed the file extension from .mpg to .mp3 :)

On the other hand, it could be a divx or xvid with an mp3 soundtrack...

Forget trying to play it with QT Player - Apple have really let us down in that regard.

Try the latest MPlayer OS X 2 and VLC.

Used to be that you could give it any extension you wanted (example:
..xls) and it would still open w/ the correct (or suggested) program.
Seems that the orphaned aliases require you hunt for the originals as
well now. Why is the system behaving more like windoze? Is the world
    coming to an end?
