Default ColdFusion Administrator - Only way to go?

Is the only way to set up a database connection through the Admin panel? I'd
like to know if it's possible to manually code a connection.

For instance, have a user use a dialog box to select a database file, then
make that available for use through a ColdFusion designed site.

If you're on CF 7 you can use the ColdFusion Administrator API and
access many of the CF admin functions programmatically.
