Default Combination of artwork size and resolution exceeds the maximum that can be rasterized?

When trying to export a TIFF for printing at my local A&E I get the following message:
Combination of artwork size and resolution exceeds the maximum that can be rasterized?
Why does illustrator care about my file size?
Ill CS - lots of ram win-xppro.
    Thank you
    Cheers

    Michael,

What are the dimensions and requested image rez of the TIFF? What mode, RGB
    or CMYK

Would the dimensions, colour depth and image rez create a file size in
    excess of 2 gigs?

    The document size is 36" x 60"
The croped area I'd like to output is 24"x48".
The file is RGB and I'm selecting CMYK when exporting as a tiff.
It works when I select a screen image (72 dpi) not 150 or 300.
I don't think the file would be over 500 meg.
    Thank you.
    Mike
It just worked if I kept the RGB mode when exporting?
I'll see how it prints? The resultant file was 100 megs.
    Thank you.
I don't understand why there would be size limitations.
    Cheers

    Michael,

A 24 x 48" at 300ppi CMYK is going to create a 395.5 meg file in memory, and
    the 36" x 60" would be 741.6 megs.

Add to that the Illustrator application and O/S overheads and you probably
    are running out of RAM.

RGB would decrease file sizes by 25%

Why do not you just open (and rasterize) your illustration with photoshop?
