compiling kernel, files missing - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

So , I'm totally new to Linux. I have just installed Debian 3 and trying to install 2.4.18 kernel to it. (I know it could have been done in the first plase, but didn't know then). I was compiling this new kernel and run to troubles when tryed to "make dev" as it says in the README. I't seems that I'm lacking files: ctype.h fcntl.h limits.h stdio.h stdlib.h strina.h unistd.h sys/fcntl.h sys/mman.h sys/stat.h sys/types.h So my guestion is, what do I have to do to get those files? -- Mika Rautaparta Vapaa-ajattelija...

    Default compiling kernel, files missing

So , I'm totally new to Linux. I have just installed Debian 3 and trying to
install 2.4.18 kernel to it. (I know it could have been done in the first
plase, but didn't know then). I was compiling this new kernel and run to
troubles when tryed to "make dev" as it says in the README. I't seems that
    I'm lacking files:
    ctype.h
    fcntl.h
    limits.h
    stdio.h
    stdlib.h
    strina.h
    unistd.h
    sys/fcntl.h
    sys/mman.h
    sys/stat.h
    sys/types.h

So my guestion is, what do I have to do to get those files?

"apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-$CPUTYPE" will do that ie:
    "apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-686" for 686 based machins.

"apt-cache search kernel-image" will show you all of them.

It looks like you didn't install the /usr/include at all.
Do you have the complete environment to program and compile?
