Compiling scanner driver problem - Ubuntu

Once again i'm in need of help. This time i'm trying to get my scanner, a CanoScan FB330P to work under Breezy. I downloaded the driver, untarred it, switched to the right directory and gave the "./configure" command. This is the output: marcoUbuntu:~/Software/Scan/scan-6.0-2$ ./configure loading cache ./config.cache checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for mawk... mawk checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no checking for strerror in -lcposix... no checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot ...

    Default Compiling scanner driver problem

Once again i'm in need of help.
This time i'm trying to get my scanner, a CanoScan FB330P to work under
Breezy. I downloaded the driver, untarred it, switched to the right
directory and gave the "./configure" command. This is the output:

    marcoUbuntu:~/Software/Scan/scan-6.0-2$ ./configure
    loading cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
    checking for mawk... mawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no
checking for strerror in -lcposix... no
    checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
    cannot create executables.
    marcoUbuntu:~/Software/Scan/scan-6.0-2$

It seems to me there is no make-file or something with the C compiler,
but there are makefiles in the directory /Software/Scan/scan-6.0-2.
What could be the problem here?
