You may need to add more memory. It's very easy to add memory (Ram).

Welcome to the world of viruses.
There are a few viruses that attack explorer.exe and it may have problems
    working.
Explorer is the program that controls your desktop, task bar and any windows
that navigate folders such as my computer, the control panel and my
    documents etc.

You should install a virus scanner on your computer and run a full scan or
    equivalant.
If you already have one, check the documentation or help files to find out
how to update the virus definition files. These 'definitions' will tell your
virus scanner about new viruses and how to remove them. To get the
definitions it will usually require a small download.

Random freezes can be caused by hardware trouble. Overheating, sloppy
display drivers or bad RAM are often at the root of these. However, your
situation seems confined to accessing directories so is more likely a
    software issue of some kind.

Suggestion: If you have a tremendous number of files in these folders,
consider breaking them up into subfolders.

Also: Check Event Viewer for error messages that coincide with the
date/time of the problems you are having. Click Start, Run and type in
eventvwr.msc to bring up this tool.

Check the entries under the System and Applications branches. Double
click any error item to read more details about the noted error.
Hopefully those details will provide some clues about what the actual
problem is so that you can focus your troubleshooting efforts.

There will be a link at the end of each error description. If you click
that while you're online, you will be asked if you want to send the
error info to MS. Say yes and after a bit of communication takes place,
another screen will appear. On occasion that screen will say "sorry, no
additional info" but if it's a common issue it will contain links for
more online resources that may help you to resolve the problem.
