Continued errors from Distiller 5.0.5 in OS X, v. 10.3.9

Default Continued errors from Distiller 5.0.5 in OS X, v. 10.3.9

Have I really stumped everyone? I posted a version of this a month ago and received NO responses. I'm starting to think the problem may have to do with an incompatibility between Distiller 5.0.5 and OS 10.3.8 and 10.3.9. I didn't have as much of a problem before those releases, and I've created hundreds of PDF files. I'm also working on two different machines: a TiBook 867 and a G4 450.

The most recent error I'm getting is:

%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: distillsave ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

The errors have varied, possibly from the different postscript drivers I've tried. The errors happen on a very regular basis, on rare occasions, a file will be produced, but it may not be correct based on the job option settings (wrong page orientation, etc.)

I'm aware that Norton Anti-Virus can conflict, but I'm running Virex, and I've even tried with Virex inactive.

Obviously, I can create PDF files from OSX apps, but that's inherently flawed, especially in terms of embedding fonts and how big the files are if a high res image resides in the original file.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

If by "inherently flawed" you are talking about the native "save as" feature in OSX, it's not the same as distilling. Try distilling from OSX.

I can't distill from OSX with Acrobat / Distiller 5.0.5. I would need version 6 for that.

I can't distill from OSX with Acrobat / Distiller 5.0.5.

Yes, you can. Print to a PostScript file in OS X then start Distiller in Classic mode and distill the file.

Sorry for the confusion. That's waht I've been doing. At that point, I am distilling in Classic, not OSX. At least not native OSX.

I have also tried distilling in OS9, but it still errors out.

I have not tried uninstalling Virex yet, as was suggested ealier, because I haven't heard that that is a problem. Kind of defeats the purpose of having anti-virus software if you have to uninstall it to run Distiller. I will try that eventually. I believe there is now a fix for the issues with Norton Anti-Virus, but that's of no use to me since I'm not running it.

Virex is known to cause this error as well as Norton.

"because I haven't heard that that is a problem"
Not true you've heard/read it now after reading the 1st post!

Some people have to be contentious. What I meant by stating that I hadn't heard that Virex was a problem, was that the reply I had received was the first I had heard of it, and it sounded like speculation, not like it was based on experience or fact.

Thank you anyway, for confirming that this is a problem. I hope that this will be remedied soon, since Apple is pushing Virex through .mac subscriptions. I guess I'll forego virus protection for being able to use Distiller. Seems odd that I never had this problem before the 10.3.8 update.

Apple seems to have removed Virex from .mac. It's not been updated for the latest versions of Mac OS X.

Upto recently, you could download Virex 7.2 from the Apple site and it
works with Acrobat and Tiger. However, I recommend turning off the Virex
startup item and manually scaning files. It is safer.

I uninstalled Virex. That was not the problem. Still getting errors:
