conversion to w3d - Macromedia Director 3D

Are there any 'new' ways of converting obj or 3ds files to the w3d format. I no longer use 3ds Max or have access to a seat. I have been toying around with sketchup and am looking for a way to import or convert to w3d skp->w3d I am really hoping in the future there will be an easier way to import 3d content into Director. Any tips or guidance would be awesome! Thanks,...

    Hi,

There use to be a 3D SpeedPort Xtra on the Adobe site that could convert OBJs to
    W3D:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/director/work_3d/using_the_obj_converter/
Can't find it on the Adobe site.

If you have a Director 8.5 Installation CD, it is in the Goodies folder. If not,
let me know and I can put it somewhere for you to access.

    Hi,

[Q]..am looking for a way to import or convert to w3d[/Q]

Regarding Sketchup 2 Director, we are are soon to release an import tool that
runs in the Director design time and creates w3d files and shockwave3D cast
    members from Sketchup models.

Anyone wanting to know more and/or receive an email notification when we put
it online can do so http://www.the-mindseye.co.uk/prog/contactus.php?subj=SU2DR

Does Director 11 have the same capability to convert obj. to w3d?

Also, I'm using Maya 2008 to do my modeling. Are there file conversion issues I need to worry about?

    Thanks!

If you upgraded to Maya 2008 from an older version you can export directly
from Maya, the last version to include the exporter was version 8 i belive. So
unless you upgraded from 8.5 you are good to go.

Oh btw having older versions of Maya installed doesn't cause any conflicts
    with the newer versions.

We bought Maya 2008. Didn't upgrade. I just wish adobe was a little more clear on the subject of w3d conversion. It's confusing.

All the exporter need is a recompile from Autodesk so join in and mail them and
    demand a new version.

One solution is to write your own exporter in Mel using the w3d sdk, Maya is
one of the easiest programs to write exporters for so a simple version might
not be too large of a project for a 3d programmer to accomplish.
